Del marle uses shading to create the illusion of a city that is falling over, or being swept to its side by wind. He uses the white marks to create this feeling along with one of chaos and dissaray. He uses many different tone values to define figures and shapes.
The distortion in this makes me feel like the world is passing by very quickly, almost out of control. I like how Del Marle used negative space to create this highly energetic effect. Possibly a comment on the speed of life?
The way he uses the white lines make the drawing so much more interesting... it creates a sense of movement which would otherwise not exist and introduces a sort of tension, between the horse and man and the two living creatures and the city. It's interesting how the simple use of different values makes this drawing almost abstract. The viewer is left feeling a tad disoriented and shaken up. Me gusta mucho.
